I decided this last summer that it was time to go back to school. After fourteen years of being away from school this was an intimidating choice to make. It has been hard to balance going to school full time and taking care of my seven children while supporting my husband in his activities. However I feel getting an edcation is rewarding and I decided to return to school for several reasons. One is because I want to be able to provide for my family should the need arise. The other is because I feel that the learning process is never finished but rather it is a continual process.
Toddlers are so full of enthusiasm to learn. They are always investigating things. Their drive to learn is what makes them such mischievous explorers. They investigate everything, often never realizing the danger they put themselves in. Cupboards are opened, shelves are climbed on, and buttons of all kinds are pushed as children start to learn about the world around them.
As children grow, they go off to school. There is a mixture of excitement and nervousness as they start pre-school or go to kindergarten for the first time. They come home full of stories to tell about the things they have learned. Reading and writing open new worlds of information for them. They are sponges that absorb everything they see and hear.
As children grow older, they become teenagers and they enter Junior High and High School. This is a period of great learning, not only about the core subjects at school but also about themselves. They enter a stage where they are beginning to define who they are. Interests are developed and some are dropped and some are more vigorously pursued. They look forward to finishing High School and having the option of whether or not to continue their education.
Young Adults enter a new phase in life. Some go to college while others want to take breaks from schooling. Whatever the decision there are still many things they are learning. They learn about things like how to deal with roommates, job skills, and what bills are. At some point they feel they have found what they want to do in life and continue down that path. Does this mean it is the end of learning for them?
No, learning is a continual process. As parenthood is entered they may start to feel like they don't know anything at all. There are new realms of concerns that lead parents to delve into new areas and topics to learn. Things they have never thought about before have to be learned. Even once children are grown and out of the house, learning is continued as they must advance with the world around them.
One of the things that is currently advancing is the uses of the internet. The school I am currently attending requires that we build an e-portfolio. An e-portfolio is a great idea for anyone pursuing a job now however, at this time I am going to school with the intention of learning more than pursuing a job. Having the ability to better provide for my family is an added benefit that I will gain from getting a degree. I am taking the opportunity to figure out how to build a website more than to build myself an e-portfolio. I am therefore putting this website together to inspire all those to continue learning, no matter their age.
